With financial aid deadlines rapidly approaching, W.Va. high school seniors rush to complete FAFSA

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – More than half of all high school seniors in the state have taken the first step toward earning a postsecondary degree or certificate by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

“FAFSA is the gateway to federal financial aid resources, but it’s also used in determining eligibility for state and school financial aid,” said Brian Weingart, Senior Director of Financial Aid at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC).

While the March 1 deadline to apply for the West Virginia PROMISE Scholarship has passed, the April 15 deadline for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant Program is a little less than a month away.

“If you have any intention of going to college in the 2019-2020 academic year, FAFSA should be the first thing on your list,” said Weingart.  “Even if you’ve missed one of the deadlines, don’t let that discourage you – it’s never too late to apply.”

Students interested in pursuing post-secondary education, whether they want to attend a four-year institution, community college or pursue career and technical training, can complete a FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov.
